Exeter Cathedral,

"Behold the Sea"

Tone poem - November Woods - Arnold Bax

A Sea Symphony - Ralph Vaughan Williams (soloist: Alison Burnett - Soprano. Paul Sheehan - Baritone)

This year's November concert will see a coming together of Exmouth Choral SocietyExeter Choral Society and Wellington Choral Society with Exeter Symphony Orchestra for a performance of this great symphony in Exeter cathedral - inspiring in its grandeur, and creatively exploratory of the moods of the sea, set to words by the great poet Walt Whitman. The guest Conductor for the Symphony will be Laurence Blyth, well known to Exeter musical scenes for his work with the named choral societies. The two soloists are Alison Burnett - soprano, and Paul Sheehan - Baritone.

Several 1st Symphonies have caused their composers problems and it took VW from 1903 to 1909 to complete this masterpiece.

Since it is also our November concert it seemed appropriate to open the concert with Sir Arnold Bax's November Woods. Many of you have already greatly enjoyed his tone poem Tintagel in past concerts - most recently the packed house in July at the Devon Wildlife trust concert - again celebrating our coastal heritage.
